The Case for a Taco Bar at Your Wedding
October 14, 2024 ● 2 MIN READ
There are a lot of wedding decisions that feel impossible.
Chicken or steak.
Round tables or farm tables.
Band or DJ.
This isn't one of them.
If you're even thinking about a taco bar, this is your sign to stop overthinking it.
Choose the tacos.
People actually eat them.
One of the funniest parts of photographing weddings is realizing how many couples never get to eat their own dinner.
They're hugging guests.
Sneaking away for sunset portraits.
Getting pulled onto the dance floor.
By the time they sit down, the plated meal is lukewarm.
A taco bar doesn't care.
Grab one now. Grab another later. Your uncle can go back for thirds. Your flower girl can eat just chips and queso. Everyone wins.
They're a conversation starter.
Buffets get people moving.
People laugh while deciding between brisket and carnitas. Someone inevitably asks, "Wait... have you tried the green salsa?"
The energy feels relaxed instead of formal.
As a documentary photographer, those little interactions are gold.
No one has ever been disappointed by queso.
I don't think this needs further explanation.
They fit almost every wedding.
Backyard wedding?
Perfect.
Hill Country venue?
Perfect.
Modern downtown loft?
Still perfect.
Black tie celebration?
Okay... maybe elevate it a little.
Fresh tortillas. Slow-smoked meats. Handmade salsas. Beautiful serving pieces.
A taco bar doesn't have to feel casual—it can feel intentional.
They're surprisingly accommodating.
Vegetarian?
Easy.
Gluten-free?
Usually easy.
Kids?
Bean and cheese.
That one cousin who only eats plain food?
Chicken and cheese.
Everyone gets to build exactly what they want instead of politely pushing green beans around their plate.
The photos are better than you'd think.
Hear me out.
Plated meals all look... kind of the same.
A taco bar has color.
Fresh cilantro.
Bright limes.
Bowls of pico.
Stacks of tortillas.
Steam rising off the grill.
It's alive.
And if your caterer makes tortillas on-site? I'm absolutely photographing that.
Also... don't skip the black beans.
I need to make a confession.
Until recently, I'd never had black beans.
I know.
At one wedding, I ducked into the bridal suite to pump while everyone was eating dinner. Someone had thoughtfully made me a plate from the taco bar, and there they were.
Black beans.
I remember thinking, Sure... I'll try them.
Reader...
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
They were so good.
Now every time I see a taco bar at a wedding, I secretly hope the black beans are making another appearance.
So this is me, publicly admitting that one of my favorite wedding food discoveries happened while sitting on the floor of a bridal suite attached to a breast pump.
Life is funny like that.
The best wedding food feels like you.
That's really what this comes down to.
Your wedding doesn't need to look like Pinterest.
If your favorite Friday night is grabbing tacos together, why wouldn't your wedding dinner reflect that?
Your guests won't remember whether you served filet mignon or roasted chicken.
They'll remember laughing with a margarita in one hand, balancing three tacos in the other, while your grandpa went back for another helping of queso.
And honestly...
That's exactly the kind of memory worth making.
So yes, this is officially my case for a taco bar.
Your guests will love it.
You'll probably actually get to eat.
And if you include black beans...
There's a very good chance your photographer will be talking about them in a blog post months later.
P.S. I promise I'll wash the salsa off my hands before I pick the camera back up. 🌮📸
